Kenya were bundled out of the CHAN 2024 tournament by Madagascar on Friday in heartbreaking fashion after losing penalty shootouts but the team has been lauded for their bravery that has got them into the quarter final and had fans believing again.

Muchiri says the tournament has been an eye-opener, both to players and fans, as it has made players aware of their qualities and got supporters to trust them.

“This has made other players believe they are able to do it,” Muchiri told the media after Friday’s match.

CHAN 2024 An Eye-Opener for Kenya

“If local-based players can play like this in front of a sold-out crowd, confidence levels have gone very high and everyone had belief in themselves so I believe it is a good moment and CHAN has been an eye-opener and our teams will be strong come next time.”

The Ulinzi Stars attacker then lauded McCarthy for the way he has led the team, predicting that Harambee Stars will soon be unbeatable if the South African coach gets time to work with both foreign and local-based players.

“Fans deserve the very best, I have been in the national team and seen how we were playing and I am really happy to be part of the squad that made fans believe and the coach [Benni McCarthy] has also made fans believe,” he added.

What is Giving Muchiri Confidence?

“He [McCarthy] has instilled confidence in us and we are playing with a lot of belief and he has no pressure. He Always says go and enjoy football and because of that, we give our very best.

“If the local-based players have made fans believe, now imagine if the coach gets time with foreign-based players and add a few local-based players? The team will be strong and fans will be happy to watch us.

“One step at a time, we have the right coach around so let us give him time to build a team that will take us to AFCON and World Cup.”

Harambee Stars’ next assignment is the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Seychelles in Nairobi next month.
