Harambee Stars head coach Benny McCarthy has thrown his full backing behind William Lenkupae, the Austria-born midfielder who has become a fixture in Kenya’s squad despite mixed reactions from fans over his performances.

Lenkupae, 23, made his international debut in March 2023 against Gambia, in the same game McCarthy took charge of Kenya for the first time.

He marked the occasion with a goal in the 3-3 draw and has since earned six caps, showing flashes of promise but also periods of inconsistency.

While he was lively in Kenya’s recent 5-0 win over Seychelles, the midfielder has faced criticism for quieter displays, such as the home clash against Gambia in Nairobi.

Yet McCarthy insists Lenkupae’s value goes beyond statistics.

“Anybody who has watched us train knows he is one of the most relentless players you’ll find,” McCarthy said. “It’s not just about talent—talent alone ends at the door.

“You need mentality, the willingness to work hard and improve. Will is the prime definition of that. He’ll play any position, give everything, and inspire others to do the same.”

As Long as I am Here, He Has a Future - McCarthy

Despite fan debate about his impact, McCarthy sees Lenkupae as an integral part of the Harambee Stars project. “He’s as Kenyan as you can get,” McCarthy said.

“He’s in with the group, the culture, even learning Swahili. When players like him put on the jersey, they show what it means to fight for the badge and the country.”

At just 23, Lenkupae has time on his side. For McCarthy, his work rate, adaptability, and commitment make him a player worth investing in for the future of the national team.
