Benni McCarthy Reveals How His Wife Shaped His Coaching Career: 'I'm Happy to Give Her All the Credit'
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has credited his wife, Stacey Munro, for playing a pivotal role in his successful transition from player to coach.
Benni McCarthy remains the only South African to have won the UEFA Champions League, achieving the feat as a prolific striker for Porto in 2004.
His illustrious playing career also included stints at major European clubs such as Ajax, Blackburn Rovers, and West Ham United, before returning home to finish his career with Orlando Pirates.
Officially retiring from professional football in 2013 as South Africa’s all-time leading goalscorer, Benni McCarthy quickly moved into coaching, earning his badges and taking charge at Cape Town City in 2017.
In an interview with Soccer Laduma, Benni McCarthy acknowledged that his wife, whom he married in 2014, has been a constant source of support and a key reason behind his achievements on the sidelines.
Benni McCarthy: She Is Blatantly Honest and Truthful With Me
Benni McCarthy spoke candidly about the profound influence his wife, Stacey Munro, has had on his life and career. He explained that having her support prevented him from making choices that could have derailed his professional path.
Benni McCarthy admitted that early in his transition from player to coach, he was tempted to take a break, enjoy life, and avoid committing to his coaching badges. However, he credited his wife with providing honest guidance, even when it was difficult to hear, helping him stay disciplined and focused.
He emphasised that having someone who challenges him rather than simply agreeing with everything has been crucial in keeping him grounded and ensuring he makes the right decisions for his career.
“No, because like I said, blatant truth. No intentions at all because I think if I didn't have such a woman behind me, I would have done God knows what footballers do,” Benni McCarthy revealed.
“Go with my gut. I may be influenced by friends, going out and not doing my coaching badges because at the time I didn't feel like it. I wanted a break. I wanted to enjoy my life.
“But when you have somebody, sometimes we need that also, you need to be told the harsh truth that you don't want to hear, and not always be a yes man, yes sir, and I'm not a yes man.”
Benni McCarthy noted that many people around you tend to avoid telling the truth, often agreeing with everything you say, which can lead to overconfidence and misguided decisions.
In contrast, he said his wife has always been brutally honest and straightforward, ensuring he faced the realities he might have ignored.
Benni McCarthy explained that after retiring, a former player can easily feel forgotten, no longer receiving the admiration that came with being on the field.
He credited his wife with pushing him to complete his coaching badges and stay involved in football, helping him realise that coaching was his true calling and something he excelled at.
Although he initially resisted the idea, he eventually embraced her advice, which he acknowledged as pivotal in shaping his current success. Benni McCarthy expressed his gratitude, emphasising that at a time when he needed someone strong and truthful, she provided exactly that, and he is happy to give her full credit for his continued journey in football.
“But in her situation, in her circumstances, she's blatantly honest, truthful with me, and when you stop playing when you retire, you're not that guy that everyone loves anymore, so you become a forgotten soul,” he added.
“She didn't want that to happen to me. She pushed me to do my coaching badges and get into football and continue in football because that was my calling, and that was what I was good at. And at the time, I was like I don't need this or I don't need that. But in the end, I pursued and followed, and yeah, I am where I am now.
“I'm happy to give her all the credit because at the time I needed somebody to be strong and honest with me, like I am with everybody else.”
