Gor Mahia flew past Ulinzi Stars in a thrilling FKF Premier League clash at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday, March 15, leaving the home side chasing shadows for much of the match.

Gor Mahia entered the match after a disappointing exit from the FKF Cup, where they lost 1-0 to BB Bread FC and a 1-0 loss to Posta Rangers in the FKF Premier League.

Ulinzi Stars were coming off a 1-0 loss to Bidco United and were looking to prove a point against Gor Mahia at home.

The match began with Gor Mahia on the front foot, earning an early advantage when Musa Shariff was brought down inside the box in the ninth minute, resulting in a penalty. Enock Morrison calmly converted from the penalty spot to give his side a 1–0 lead.

Gor Mahia continued their momentum, maintaining control of the match with repeated attacking moves that kept the opposition goalkeeper busy, with most of the action unfolding in the opponent’s half.

In the 24th minute, Ulinzi Stars tried responding when Brian Birgen delivered a precise cross from the right targeting Stephen Murunga Nyongesa, who rose for a header, but Byrne Omondi was alert and made a strong save to keep it out.

In the 30th minute, Ulinzi Stars attempted a rapid counter, but the move was ruled offside, keeping the game alive.

In the 35th minute, Mike Kibwage replaced Sylvester Owino, who went off injured and required treatment. Gor Mahia went into the break having created several good chances and building a positive rhythm, despite the setback of Sylvester Owino’s injury.

Ulinzi Stars came back out for the second half with everything to play for, determined to turn the game around as the action resumed with renewed intensity. However, it was not a walk in the park for the team.

In the 50th minute, Boniface Muchiri had a chance to equalise as he delivered a dangerous free kick into the box, but Byrne Omondi reacted sharply to produce a brilliant save.

Musa Shariff continued his dominant display on the left wing, driving forward with pace, creating opportunities, and keeping the Ulinzi defence under constant pressure.

In the 60th minute, Ulinzi Stars then delivered a great team move from the back that saw Staphod Odhiambo and Emilio Brian exchange neat passes in midfield.

Staphod Odhiambo then set up Nyongesa on the right, who delivered a good cross, but no Ulinzi Stars players were in the box to finish the move.

Gor Mahia then made a substitution in the 64th minute as Patrick Esombe came on for Ebenezer Assifuah. In the 68th minute, the newly introduced substitute Patrick Essombe made an immediate impact by finding the back of the net, doubling Gor Mahia’s advantage and putting them firmly in control at 2-0.

In the 75th minute, Gor Mahia extended their lead as Musa Shariff scored a brilliant third goal, making it 3-0 and sending the crowd into celebration.

In the 82nd minute, Gor Mahia solidified their 3-0 lead over Ulinzi Stars with a triple change: Ebenezer Adukwaw came on for Shariff Musa, Ben Stanley Omondi replaced Jackson Dwang, and Fidel Origa took the place of Alpha Onyango.

In the 88th minute, Ulinzi Stars found a late lifeline as Stephen Odhiambo pulled a goal back to make it 1-3. Despite the added time, Ulinzi Stars were unable to find any further breakthrough as Gor Mahia’s defense held firm to secure the victory.

With these three points, Gor Mahia successfully widened the gap between themselves and their perennial rivals, AFC Leopards, in the league standings.
