The Everton midfielder, who can also play in central defence, is currently on loan at English League One club Stockport County but he has been keenly following what is happening in Kenya.

Born in England to a Kenyan father and English mother, Onyango has dual citizenship which makes him eligible to represent both Kenya and England but he seems more interested in turning out for Harambee Stars something he has spoken glowingly over.

“I love African football. There are so many great African players in the Premier League, and I want to be one of them — playing for Kenya, making a name, and making the fans proud,” the 22-year-old said on Added Time Podcast as quoted by Citizen Digital.

“Kenyans are amazing supporters of their national teams. I would love to be part of that journey and give them joy through football,” he added.

Tyler Onyango Can’t Wait to Play for McCarthy

One thing that is making Onyango keen on a switch to Kenya sooner rather than later is his desire to work under McCarthy who he admires a lot given the career he had as a player, featuring for top teams in Europe like Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo, FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League.

What is more, Onyango is in awe at the South African coach’s experience as a tactician which has seen him work in his country as well as at Manchester United, where he had a two-year stint as the club’s attacking coach, under ex-manager Erik ten Hag.

“Benni is a coach I admire. His experience is top-level, and it would be a dream to play under someone like him,” he added.

Born in Luton, Onyango honed his career at Everton where he worked through the youth teams from 2011-2011 and made his senior debut for the Toffees in 20220.

He has so far managed five senior appearances for Everton but spent the last three seasons on loan, first at Burton Albion, Forest Green and now Stockport County, all in England’s third division League One.
