Australia Face Major Setback Ahead of Potential Clash with Harambee Starlets in FIFA Series
The Australian Matildas have been dealt a significant blow on the eve of their World Cup qualifying campaign, with superstar defender Steph Catley sidelined by an untimely calf injury.
Catley will miss the upcoming FIFA series in Africa, starting with Saturday's match against Malawi. The team has confirmed that no replacement will be called into the squad for what will be Australia's first outing since their heartbreaking loss to Japan in the Asian Cup final.
Following the Malawi clash, the Matildas are scheduled to face either India or Kenya the following week. They will have to navigate these crucial fixtures without Catley, who famously scored the winning penalty against Ireland in Australia's opening match of the 2023 home World Cup.
The Arsenal defender's importance to the squad is immense. Catley's exceptional form last season saw her finish 29th in the Ballon d'Or rankings, making her only the third Australian player ever nominated for football's most prestigious individual award.
Catley started in last month's 1-0 defeat to Japan, but her injury adds to the team's selection challenges. Star attacker Mary Fowler was also not included in the initial squad as she continues her recovery from a major knee injury sustained last year.
Coach Remains Unfazed Ahead of FIFA Series
Despite the absences, coach Joe Montemurro has named an experienced roster for the international window, led by prolific goal-scorer Sam Kerr.
"I think continuity is the most important thing. Are we able to continue doing what we’re doing against different opposition?" Montemurro stated.
"It's really important that we’ve set the base for continuity going forward, for me to make the relative adjustments, see the combinations I’m looking for, and prepare for the World Cup. We have to do it through the benchmark that we’ve set."
"So it was strategic to bring the bulk of the squad back," he added. "And, surprise surprise, a lot of them wanted to come back and continue the work that we’re doing, which was great."
These matches mark the beginning of the Matildas' journey to next year's World Cup in Brazil. The team aims to build on their dream run to the semi-finals a few years ago, a campaign that captivated the nation and set new records for attendance and television viewership.
