Austin Odhiambo: Harambee Stars Playmaker Reveals the Truth About Fan Pressure in Football
Austin Odhiambo has opened up in detail about why players should embrace fan pressure and use it as a driving force if they want to succeed at the highest level.
During his time at Gor Mahia, he noted that fans are deeply invested in players’ performances and quickly react when they fall short.
He added that playing for Harambee Stars comes with even greater pressure from supporters, which he believes is beneficial.
The former Gor Mahia midfielder emphasised that instead of viewing it negatively, players should use that pressure to improve their performances.
Austin Odhiambo: No Player or Coach Should Complain
Speaking on Obinna TV Updates, Austin Odhiambo said that neither players nor coaches at Gor Mahia or any other club should be surprised by the high expectations from supporters, noting that such demands have long been part of the club’s culture.
The Nejmeh SC midfielder explained that fans are quick to celebrate strong performances just as they are vocal when standards drop, and players ought to accept both reactions as part of the game.
Austin Odhiambo added that supporters play a key role in elevating a player’s profile, describing their criticism as fair and their demands as a reflection of passion for the team.
He further pointed out that the pressure and occasional frustration from fans should serve as motivation, pushing players to stay focused, work harder, and avoid complacency on the pitch.
“No player or coach should complain about that because that’s Gor Mahia, and they have been doing that for so many years. The good thing about the fans is that if you do well, they won’t keep quiet; they will praise you,” Austin Odhiambo said.
“That is a side that, as players, we should embrace as well. A fan is the one who makes my name big out there, so they are just trying to be fair. Also, a fan getting angry and demanding something from you, it is a source of motivation for you to work hard.
“Many players take it wrongly, but I believe fans give us the motivation and pressure to always want to work hard. I go to the pitch knowing that I can’t mess things up.”
Austin Odhiambo believes that fan expectations, whether praise or criticism, are an essential part of football, and players who learn to channel that pressure positively are more likely to grow, remain consistent, and succeed at both club and international level.
