Wolves began brightly, with Rodrigo Gomes forcing an early save from Nick Pope just eight seconds in.
However, Newcastle soon took control, with Sam Johnstone making a spectacular stop to deny Jacob Murphy from close range.
Eddie Howe's men took the lead on the half-hour mark. Nick Woltemade, the replacement for Alexander Isak, headed home from Murphy's cross on his debut, giving Newcastle a deserved advantage.
The second half lacked the same intensity, with Wolves' triple substitution by Vítor Pereira failing to ignite their attack, particularly without Jørgen Strand Larsen.
Tolu Arokodare had minimal impact on his debut and was hauled off just after the hour mark.
Newcastle held on to their lead comfortably, ending a five-match winless run in the Premier League.
