Another Window of Opportunity for Benni McCarthy? Dream Job Becomes Available as Coach is Sacked After 33 Days
For the second time this season, Celtic have gone back in for veteran Martin O’Neil to help rescue their season.
O’Neil was first appointed interim manager when Brendan Rodgers left the club last October and after one month, he gave way to Frenchman Wilfred Nancy, who was hired as the new permanent boss.
However, Nancy lasted just 33 days in the job before being sacked on Monday after six defeats in eight games and the Scottish giants are back in the market for a new manager.
McCarthy Did His Bidding for the Job
This time round though, O’Neil will take charge until the end of the season but has a second window of opportunity opened up for Benni McCarthy?
Just before Rodgers left Celtic, the Harambee Stars coach made it clear he would jump at an opportunity to manage one of Scotland’s ‘Big Two’ of Celtic and Rangers.
“I am up in Scotland right now, so who knows? I’ll definitely put my CV in for Rangers one day because that would be like managing Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Man United up in Scotland because that’s how big they are. Ditto Celtic – if that job were to become available, it would be a dream job for any manager worth their salt,” McCarthy told Best Betting Sites in October.
Could Celtic Hire Harambee Stars Boss?
After being overlooked for the relatively inexperienced Nancy, who was hired from MLS club Columbus Crew, is it time Celtic tried out the South African?
That is a question Celtic will have to answer and while McCarthy will not feature prominently in their list of potential managers, he will be confident of doing a good job if the opportunity ever arose.
McCarthy has never hidden his desire to manage a big high-pressure club and Celtic is one of those as managers are expected to win every match at Hampden Park.
The Harambee Stars boss has already been in such an environment, when he was first-team coach at Manchester United for two years, an experience that gave him good grounding on managing a massive club, but whether he will be on the list of targets for Celtic remains to be seen.
