AK welcomes World Mountain Running president ahead of Mt. Longonot Trail Challenge showdown

Kenya is set to make history as it hosts its first-ever Mountain Running World Ranking event on November 16, 2024.

Known as the Mount Longonot Challenge, the highly anticipated race will take place at the Mount Longonot National Park in Naivasha, marking a significant milestone for mountain running in Kenya and Africa at large.

Athletics Kenya (AK) president Jackson Tuwei warmly welcomed World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) President Tomo Sarf to the Riadha House offices in Nairobi ahead of the showdown.

Sarf arrived in Kenya on Sunday to oversee preparations for the event, highlighting Kenya’s growing reputation in the global mountain running circuit.

Kenya’s entry into the scene is well-timed, given the dominance of Kenyan athletes in the current WMRA standings.

Patrick Kipngeno sits at the top of the men’s ranking, with his compatriot Josphat Kiprotich following in second place.

Philemon Kiriago and Richard Atuya are also strong contenders, holding fourth and fifth places, respectively.

In the women’s rankings, Joyce Muthoni Njeru leads, with fellow Kenyan Philaries Jeruto Kisang in third position.
