Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed believes East Africa will deliver a successful 2027 Africa Cup of Nations but is not keen to be drawn in comparisons with Morocco.

Morocco delivered what many have described as the most well-organized AFCON ever in 2025 with top notch facilities complemented by a welcoming population and earned plaudits from many countries.

However, there have been doubts over whether East Africa can match or beat those standards and Mohammed remains confident that the region will surprise everyone due to a number of factors that make it unique.

“I have no doubt East Africa is ready and will deliver the best AFCON the continent and the world has ever seen,” Mohammed said during a meeting with CAF president Patrice Motsepe.

“We do not intend to compete with Morocco as the Minister has alluded to. We are unique in East Africa and we will deliver a unique AFCON that has never been seen.”

What Makes East Africa Different?

With Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania intensifying preparations in terms of construction and upgrade of stadiums and training facilities, the FKF boss says there is much more that East Africa will showcase beyond football.

“In this regard, it is not just the hardware, being the facilities and stadiums but also the software,” he added. “East Africa is known for its hospitality, we are known to be a hardworking population and we are known for delivering quality and we experienced that with CHAN.”

Critics have pointed to the state of facilities in East Africa, claiming the region might not ready or not come close to what was witnessed in Morocco, while some have travel logistics fears due to the fact that the tournament will be staged in three countries.

However, Motsepe has expressed confidence in the region staging a memorable tournament, having dismissed reports earlier this year that East Africa could lose the hosting rights.
