With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations set to begin in Morocco on December 21, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a comprehensive list of items that will be banned from all tournament venues.

The regulations, published on CAF's official website, are designed to guarantee the safety and security of all spectators throughout the competition.

All fans attending matches will undergo security checks upon entry. To ensure a safe, orderly, and enjoyable experience, attendees are strongly advised to leave any prohibited items at home.

AFCON 2025 Focusing on Safety First

The most critical bans target items that pose an immediate physical threat to spectators, players, and officials. Weapons and sharp objects of any kind are, naturally, at the top of the prohibited list. This is a non-negotiable safety measure.

Furthermore, any items that can cause a loud disturbance, fire, or be used as projectiles are completely outlawed. This includes fireworks, flares, or explosives (pyrotechnics), flammable materials, bottles, cans, and glass items.

Fans are generally advised that only certain types of small, empty, and clear plastic bottles may be allowed, though local guidance should be checked closely.

AFCON 2025: The Zero-Tolerance Zone

In line with Moroccan law and cultural norms, CAF has instituted a strict ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol inside and immediately surrounding all six AFCON 2025 host stadiums. Spectators found attempting to bring in alcoholic beverages or illegal substances, or drugs will be denied entry.

A newer focus of security, following global incidents in football, is the ban on electronic distractions. Laser pointers are strictly forbidden.

These devices have been used to distract players, particularly goalkeepers, and CAF is taking a zero-tolerance stance on this form of cheating and dangerous hazard. Similarly, radio-emitting devices other than standard mobile phones are not permitted.

AFCON 2025 Focusing on Maintaining Order

To ensure smooth entry and clear sightlines, several common fan items are also restricted. Heavy or large bags/backpacks are prohibited. Fans are strongly advised to travel light, as only small clutches or bags adhering to specific size limits (often related to clear bag policies) will be allowed after inspection.

Oversized flags and banners that exceed typical dimensions (usually 1-2 meters) are banned. While national colours are encouraged, banners that obstruct the view of others cause discomfort and disputes.

Musical instruments and loud horns, including trumpets, vuvuzelas, and whistles, are often restricted to control noise pollution and ensure an enjoyable environment for all.

Professional cameras and recording equipment (those with detachable lenses) are prohibited to protect commercial broadcasting rights. Drones and animals (excluding certified service animals) are also explicitly banned.

The ban also extends to material that threatens the respectful spirit of the game. Banners or materials with political, religious, or offensive/discriminatory messages are strictly prohibited, as are any materials intended for unauthorised commercial purposes. The emphasis is on celebrating football, not spreading divisive or hostile rhetoric.
