The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has announced a substantial 40% increase in prize money for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cote d’Ivoire.

Super Eagles and others to target CAF’s largesse
Ahead of the competition which is set to kick off on January 13th, CAF took to its website to release a statement about prize money.
According to the report, should Nigeria’s Super Eagles emerge winners of the competition, they will celebrate with a grand prize of USD 7, 000,000.
For the runner-up, the reward has also witnessed an increase, with USD 4,000,000 set aside while the semifinalists will get USD 2,5000,000.
Teams that qualified for the quarterfinal are also not left out, with USD 1,300,000 for each of them
This is a notable increase in the Championship’s prize money which reflects a commitment from CAF to recognise and reward excellence on the football pitch.
Per CAF, this increase is not just for outstanding performances but also to help the respective Federations grow and develop football in their regions.
Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the President of CAF, expressed his optimism about the positive impact of these changes. "CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions,” he said.
“We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to USD 7,000,000, which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money," Motsepe added.
"I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations."
While the tournament kicks off on January 13th, Nigeria will face Equatorial Guinea in its opener 24 hours later.
