In January 2004, Okocha lit up the Reebok Stadium in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final against Aston Villa. With Bolton pushing for a rare final appearance, the Nigerian captain took control of the tie, scoring two stunning free-kick goals.

The first was right in front of the box, and Okocha placed this well over the wall, setting the tone for a 5-2 win.

For the second, he shot the ball magnificently with the outside of his right foot, catching both the wall and goalkeeper unaware to seal the victory.

Villa won the second leg 2-0 but could not make up the three-goal deficit, leaving Bolton with a final date with Middlesbrough.

3. Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Karlsruher – Bundesliga, 1993

This was the game where a young Okocha truly introduced himself to European football. Playing for Eintracht Frankfurt, he scored one of the most iconic goals in Bundesliga history.

After twisting and turning past several Karlsruher defenders, including leaving German international goalkeeper Oliver Kahn on the floor more than once, he slotted the ball home with coolness. The crowd was stunned, and it was not just because of his goal, as he had a solid performance.

In Tunisia, Nigeria found themselves once again facing Cameroon, and as always, the stakes were high. Okocha stepped up when it mattered most, delivering a captain’s performance.

5. Bolton Wanderers vs Tottenham – Premier League, November 2003

This was a classic Okocha masterclass in the Premier League. In a 1-0 win over Spurs, Okocha did not score, but he was everywhere, picking passes, gliding past defenders, and creating chance after chance.

He used his famous flip-flap skill, leaving defenders chasing shadows. The way he controlled the midfield with swagger and efficiency was something few could do.

For Bolton fans, this game was one of those moments when they realised they had a true superstar in their ranks and not just a cult hero but a player capable of bossing Premier League matches on his own terms. Okocha also showed why he is rated as one of the most skilful players to exist.
