Kenya Sevens will hope to win all pool matches to top their group and land a favourable opponent in the cup quarter-final.

Kenya Sevens will begin their Olympic qualifiers against Nigeria when the African Sevens start on September 16 in Zimbabwe.

Shujaa have what looks like an easy pool, at least on paper, and will be expected to cast aside the Nigerians with ease on the opening day of the two-day tournament.

After Nigeria, Kenya will then tackle Namibia then complete group stage action against Zambia.

Assuming they top Pool B, they will meet the best third-placed team from the Pools in the Cup quarter-final where Pool A has South Africa, Madagascar, Tunisia, and Ivory Coast while Pool C comprises Uganda, hosts Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso and Algeria.

New Shujaa head coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua named a 36-man provisional squad for what is his first assignment on Wednesday with players who have shone for their clubs during the ongoing National Sevens Circuit given the nod as well as some Kenya Sevens regulars.

Circuit leaders Kabras Sugar form the bulk of the squad with William Mwanjii, Lamech Ambesta and Brian Tanga, Kevin Wekesa, being named in the squad.

Fijian-born fly half Jone Kubu was axed from the squad after he was suspended for 11 games for stamping a Strathmore Leos player during their semi-finals at the Christie 7s.

Oilers’ Dennis Abukuse, who has been in scintillating form this season, will add the much-needed quality to the side while Samuel Asati, Daniel Taabu, Billy Odhiambo and Herman Humwa are some of the experienced stars who will bring the knowhow.

Kenya effortlessly qualified for the last two Olympics but things are set to get a little tough this time around, given South Africa are also in the qualifiers after failing to finish in the top four at last season’s World Series.

While it has previously been much easier to qualify for the Olympics via this route with the likes of Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Madagascar, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, and Namibia to contend with, South Africa presents a big threat.

The winner of the qualifiers will seal their ticket to the Paris 2024 Games and if Kenya fail to win the tournament, they will hope to finish second or third to qualify for the 2024 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament while also making it to the 2024 Challenger Series.
