The stadium has been in a poor state for decades.

The government has hit the ground running by injecting Ksh300 million in a quest to renovate the Embu Stadium a month before the Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled for June 1, 2023.

Speaking at the sight, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said they hope the project will be complete in the next 45 days.

“We also hope that by then, all the amenities will have been put together. The decision to renovate the stadium came after President William Ruto declared that this year’s celebrations will be held in Embu.

Before that, the stadium was in a discreditable condition and was used for various devious purposes like being a criminal hideout,” Omollo said.

Omollo, however, plans to change that as he noted that they were visiting the stadium for the second time to check on its progress. He added that they had initially wanted to host the event at the Njukiiri Stadium.

“It is our second time here physically to check the progress. We want to make sure the level of progress is going steadily and make sure when the day comes, we shall be ready.

We expect the contractors to give us the stadium a month before the celebrations. At the moment, I am happy that there is a lot of work going on,” he said.

The project involves the construction of a standard pitch, race track, terraces, recreation facilities, dressing rooms and ablution blocks.

Also, in attendance was Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire and Sports PS John Mueke.
