Senegal Fire Early Warning to Harambee Stars and CHAN Rivals Ahead of Title Defence

Senegal, the defending CHAN champions, have begun their preparations under new coach Souleymane Diallo, sending a strong message to Harambee Stars and other contenders.

Preparations are ramping up as the countdown to the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) begins.

Senegal, the reigning champions, are already sending a strong message to hosts Harambee Stars and other contenders that they are here to defend their title, and they will not be making it easy for anyone.

The tournament is scheduled for August 2 to 30, set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Pressure is mounting on Harambee Stars, who are not only debuting as hosts but also aiming to make a serious impact in front of their home fans, as the final of the tournament will be held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Senegal Coach Souleymane Diallo: I Have a Very Good State of Mind Overall

However, Souleymane Diallo, who has taken over as Senegal head coach from title-winning Pape Thiaw, remains calm, confident, and laser-focused on the top prize.

The Lions of Teranga are in Group D, which includes Nigeria, Sudan, and Congo, and they will be looking to go past the group stages and end up in the final.

"I have a very good state of mind overall. I think the boys are aware of what is at stake in this competition, but we must not put ourselves under pressure. For me, the most important thing is the first game," Souleymane Diallo said in an exclusive with CAF Online.

“We will have to approach it with a very good state of mind, a very good mentality, but above all an African mentality which consists of being serene first and identifying the obstacles we need to tackle.”

Even with a squad full of new faces, only Serigné Koita and Aboudoulaye Dieng return from their 2022 CHAN-winning team, Diallo is not backing down from the challenge. Instead, he sees their title as a target to be defended with pride, not pressure.

Souleymane Diallo added that overall, preparations are going very well and that the program plan they have drawn up is proceeding normally.

He mentioned that they have taken the boys into a training camp, where they will remain until the start of the competition. He added that they would also have a training camp in a country bordering Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

“No, no pressure! I am used to saying that. Pressure is important in all things. Most importantly, the source of the pressure must first be identified,” he revealed.

“If you identify the source of the pressure and you identify the nature of the pressure, for me, right now, there's no more pressure, but there's situational awareness. It's true that Senegal is the African champion, but don't forget that the African champion squad is not the same squad as we have at the moment.”

Souleymane Diallo emphasised that it was important to point out the nuanced difference between bringing the title of African champions and bringing the same squad that had won it.

He said that what matters most is approaching the competition in the best possible way, without hiding their identity as African champions.

On the contrary, he noted, the awareness of holding that mantle has pushed them to adopt a more cautious and serene approach.

“I think that today, I have a little African experience. This pan-African experience will serve as a support for us to be able to approach this competition. I have had the opportunity to do several African and world competitions,” he added.

“Three Junior World Cups, three Junior African Cups, two African Games. I think we will base ourselves on these experiences, on these African competitions, to be able to approach this competition in the most serene way possible.”

Harambee Stars Under Pressure to Deliver

Meanwhile, Harambee Stars, with home support and national pride on the line, are under pressure to show up big.

With domestic preparations ramping up, Kenya will need to match Senegal’s discipline and tournament experience if they are to seriously contend.

When asked who he sees as favourites, Diallo warned against making predictions, sending a veiled challenge to the rest of the continent.

“It will be very, very difficult to say about the teams… So it will be very difficult, bordering on suicidal, to want to predict the potential winners,” he said.

With Kenya’s Harambee Stars, defending champions Senegal, and traditional heavyweights like Morocco, DRC Congo, Angola, and Zambia all in the mix, CHAN 2024 is shaping up to be a battlefield and Senegal have just fired the first warning shot.
