Gor Mahia's Alpha Onyango has revealed stance over his future with Gor Mahia as he prepares for a make-or-break CHAN 2024 experience with Harambee Stars.

Harambee Stars midfielder Alpha Onyango has confirmed that he has been attracting interest from a host of international clubs following his brilliant individual season at Gor Mahia—and is optimistic of even better opportunities after the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Kenya, who are set to participate in the tournament for the first time in their history, will co-host it alongside Uganda and Tanzania this August, with Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia as the two venues to be used in Kenya.

Onyango, who scored five goals in all competitions for Gor Mahia in a season that saw them miss out on silverware for the first time in their history, is a man on a mission—not only to help his country make history, but also to secure his professional future.

“So far so good. Camp has been good. We are improving daily, and I think we are heading in the right direction as a team, so we’re looking forward to the upcoming matches,” Onyango told Pulse Sports from the team’s training base in Kasarani on Wednesday.

Onyango made his long-awaited Kenya debut against Chad in Morocco last June and even captained the side on his second start for the national team.

However, he remains focused and grounded, refusing to get complacent despite earning coach Benni McCarthy’s trust.

“The team comes first before the individual. As a team, we are ready for the tournament and we are building up for it.”

Lessons From Teddy Akumu

Veteran midfielder Teddy Akumu is currently training with the team as they prepare to fly to Arusha for the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament, where they’ll face Uganda, Tanzania, and Congo Brazzaville as part of their CHAN preparation.

Akumu, who is also looking to secure a new club after being released by Kheybar Khorramabad in Iran, has played a mentorship role for Onyango in recent months.

“Teddy and I have been together for several camps. He’s always advising me when I make mistakes, and being with him in camp always boosts me. We’ve never played together in a competitive match, but I’m really looking forward to it.”

Asked whether he’s worried about competition from Akumu and other central midfielders in the squad, Onyango responded confidently:

“I have no pressure. Football is all about competition. He brings experience from playing for several years, which is a welcome boost.”

Onyango’s future outside Gor Mahia?

Onyango also revealed that he may have already played his last game for Gor Mahia, given the offers he’s receiving—though he remains focused on the task at hand.

“I want to sell myself. Obviously, it would be a big step in my career, and hopefully, things will be better. Definitely, there’s been some interest, but let’s complete the tournament first and then see what happens from there.”
