Harambee Stars have withdrawn from the CECAFA tournament at the last minute following concerns from the technical bench, led by head coach Benni McCarthy.

Harambee Stars have pulled out of the much-anticipated CECAFA Four Nations tournament that was scheduled to begin on Monday, July 21 (today).

The match would be instrumental for Harambee Stars to gauge their form ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) that will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from August 2 to 30.

In the four-nations tournament, Harambee Stars were scheduled to go up against Tanzania in their opening match at 3 PM Kenyan time.

They would then face off against Senegal on Thursday, and wrap up the tournament with a clash against Uganda on Sunday, all matches scheduled to be staged at the Karatu Stadium in Tanzania.

In a statement released to the public, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) pointed out that Harambee Stars’ technical bench, under Head Coach Benni McCarthy, decided to withdraw from the event.

This was after carefully evaluating the conditions, which were found to be unfavourable for effective participation and preparation.

FKF further stated that the team will now return to Kenya and resume training for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with full attention redirected toward achieving peak readiness for the tournament.

“FKF remains committed to providing the national team with the best possible environment to compete and represent the country with pride,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, just before the withdrawal, former Manchester United attacking coach Benni McCarthy had insisted on the importance of the tournament.

Benni McCarthy pointed out that they would face formidable opponents, a move that would help them know what to work on to make an impact in CHAN.

“This tournament comes at the perfect time for us. It is a good platform to gauge our preparedness for CHAN. We’re not going there just to participate, we want to compete and learn,” Benni McCarthy said as quoted by The Star.

“We are going to face formidable opponents and that will clearly show us what is working and what needs to be fixed. These matches will provide us with valuable lessons and help us understand our strengths and weaknesses ahead of CHAN.”

However, following the withdrawal, Harambee Stars are looking to focus solely on training as they gear up for a clash against DR Congo, Angola, Morocco and Zambia in Group A.
