Harambee Stars Defender’s Value Drops by Ksh304 Million Following Relegation in Europe

The Kenyan international is feeling the full force of his team’s top flight relegation after it affected his market value that has dropped by €2 million (Ksh304 million).

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu has seen his value take a hit following his club’s relegation from the French top flight.

Okumu suffered relegation with Stade de Reims in May when the club saw their stay in the Ligue 1 come to an end after losing the promotion-relegation playoff to second tier club Metz.

It was one of the worst campaigns for Reims, who lost eight games as they finished 16th in Ligue 1, going down for the first time since their promotion back to the top flight in 2018.

Despite being a mainstay for the team, Okumu has seen his value drop from €9 million (Ksh1.4 billion) in January to €7 million (Ksh1.1 billion) in June when the last Transfermarkt update was made.

That is a drop of €2 million (Ksh304 million) for the Kenyan international who had seen his value skyrocket in a few months since switching from Belgian side KAA Gent to Reims in the summer of 2023.

Okumu had witnessed a significant rise in his value during the 2023-24 season when he rose from €4 million in June 2023 to €9 million in October that year.

The 28-year-old still has three years remaining on his deal at Reims, having signed a four-year deal when he joined for €12 million.

Okumu’s future at Reims is, however, subject to speculation as it is still not known if he will be willing to play in the second tier of if he is looking for a new club that will offer him top flight football in 2025-26.

The centre-back has made 43 appearances while scoring two goals in his two seasons at Reims, including 28 games and a goal in the 2024-25 campaign.
