Kenyan defender Joseph Okumu will have to contend with playing in the French second tier next season unless he can find another club following Reims’ relegation.

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu will not play top flight football next season unless he finds another club after suffering relegation with Stade de Reims on Thursday.

Reims found themselves in the brutal relegation-promotion playoff where they faced off with Metz, who were looking for an immediate top flight return, and having played out a 1-1 draw last week, the winner knew what was at stake on Thursday night.

Okumu and his team-mates got off to a good start when Malian midfielder Ange Tia gave them a 57h minute lead but Matthieu Udol equalised for Metz 12 minutes from time, forcing the game into extra-time.

It is here that heartbreak awaited for Reims as Metz scored two goals in four minutes to dash their hopes of staying in the top flight.

Gauthier Hein made a good run and backheeled the ball to Alpha Toure, who smashed home for 2-1 in favour of Metz in the 110th minute, and he had a say in the outcome of the contest four minutes later when he blasted the home the third one as his side won 3-1 on Thursday and 4-1 on aggregate.

Metz therefore earned an immediate top flight return having been relegated after losing last season’s playoff to Saint Etienne while it is further misery for Okumu and his team-mates after losing the French Cup final to Paris Saint-Germain last week.

This marks one of the worst campaigns for Reims, who lost eight games as they finished 16th in Ligue 1, and will go down for the first time since their promotion back to the top flight in 2018.

Okumu was one of the top performers in the playoff but that was not enough in a campaign when he played 28 games and scored one goal across all competitions.

The Kenyan defender is now at crossroads as he has to choose between staying at Reims and playing in the French second tier or seek a move elsewhere to get top flight football of which he will not be without suitors given the number of teams in Europe that have been linked to him.

Okumu joined Reims in July 2023 from Belgian side KAA Gent for €12 million and signed a four-year contract.
