Marvin Nabwire has opened up about being shown a red card in the Harambee Stars match against Angola in the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), being co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Marvin Nabwire was shown the red card in the 21st minute for a poor tackle, forcing Harambee Stars to play with one man less throughout the game.

However, the players put in the work, holding Angola to a 1-1 draw, thanks to Austin Odhiambo’s penalty that found the back of the net. Marvin Nabwire has finally opened up about what was going through his mind as he walked off the pitch after the ruling.

Kenya vs Angola: Marvin Nabwire Opens Up About His Emotions After Red Card

Marvin Nabwire revealed that if it were not for his tackle, then they would have lost the match to Angola, noting that he decided to be the sacrificial lamb.

The Kenya Police FC midfielder revealed that after he was shown the record, many things were running through his mind.

He admitted that he had his fingers crossed throughout, silently praying that Harambee Stars would at least secure a draw against Angola or, even better, snatch a win, because a loss would have placed the blame squarely on his shoulders.

“I saw the situation was bad, and I decided to take one for the team. As a player, it’s good to cover a mistake for your teammates,” Marvin Nabwire said in an interview on Radio Jambo.

“I don’t think it’s something that everyone likes…I was so unsettled about it because when I was leaving the pitch, I was praying that the worst result would just be a draw, and if not that, then we should just win, but we should not concede. I didn’t want to be blamed if Harambee Stars lost.”

Aboud Omar: Marvin Nabwire Was Our Hero

Harambee Stars captain insisted that Marvin Nabwire is the one who saved the day as they played against Angola, despite the red card.

Aboud Omar insisted that had he failed to make that crucial tackle, his opponent would have been through on goal, and Harambee Stars could have conceded, possibly even losing the match as a result.

“I can say he was our hero because without him doing that tackle, we could have been beaten. He took one for the team, and we had to cover for that mistake,” he revealed.

Harambee Stars have since progressed smoothly throughout the tournament, having won their match against Angola. They started their campaign with a victory over DR Congo.

Now, they face off against a shattered Zambian side, hungry for a win in their final group stage match on Sunday, August 17.
