The midfielder had become a free agent after his two-year stint with Azam and was assessing a lot of options until the law enforcers came knocking.

Kenya Police FC's newest sheriff in town Kenneth Muguna has explained why he snubbed Gor Mahia following his release from Tanzanian outfit Azam FC last season.

Muguna had become a free agent after ending his two-year stint in Tanzania, and was assessing a lot of options until Police came knocking on his door recently.

There was an option to return to Gor Mahia given their return to continental football having won the title for the first time in three years, but he decided to reject overtures by his former employers to link up with the a law enforcers.

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Muguna gave his honest opinion as to why he chose Police.

“It has always been purely financially related. Even when I was playing for Tirana, they did not pay me what I wanted, so it was best for us to part ways. When you are playing far away from home like that, you need it because you have a family that is looking up to you as its breadwinner,” Muguna said.

The Harambee Stars midfield maesto captained the Gor Mahia team that reached the quater-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in 2019, where they lost to Morocco's RSB Berkane 7-2 on aggregate.

"The players know what they are capable of doing but it is up to them. We already did our part and we are now leaving it in their hands," he added of Gor Mahia's participation in next season's CAF Champions League.

“If they can manage to beat that record, well and good, if they cannot, they just have to keep trying.”

The 2016 Kenya Premier League’s Most Valuable Player has also explained why things did not work out for him at Azam, after a bright start to life in Tanzania.

“I suffered from a few injuries here and there. When I came back, the team was settled and stable, so getting a chance again was very difficult, but that is how football is," added Muguna.

“Sometimes, injuries take place and they affect your run, but I am satisfied with the two years I spent at Azam. I gave them what they wanted from me and they gave me what I wanted from them. It was a fair deal and I wish them all the best.”

Muguna is believed to have been offered a signing-on fee of over Ksh1 million with a monthly salary of over Ksh200,000 by his new employers on his one-year deal.
