Kisii Governor Simba Arati has discussed ongoing delays in Gusii Stadium renovations emphasizing commitment to quality and timely completion.

Kisii Governor Simba Arati has shed light on the ongoing delays in the renovation of Gusii Stadium, attributing the prolonged timeline to various challenges faced by the contractor.

The stadium, a central hub for football in the region, has been under scrutiny for its delayed completion and subpar conditions, impacting local teams and fans alike.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) notably barred Shabana FC from using the Gusii Stadium for their home matches due to the poor state of the pitch.

This decision highlighted the urgent need for renovations, particularly focusing on the playing surface, which has been a major concern for Shabana fans.

Governor Arati, in a candid interview with Citizen TV, acknowledged these concerns and provided insights into the underlying issues.

"When I came into office, I ensured the completion of the stadium. The stadium used to be waterlogged due to underground pipes that weren't functioning properly; they were too thin to effectively drain the playing surface."

Aarti further revealed the complexities involved in the renovation process, including issues with the initial contractor.

"We discovered that the contractor had already been paid, yet the work was incomplete. Therefore, we insisted that for any further payment, he must replace the thin pipes with those of the required standard, even though the work area was quite challenging," he added.

Despite the promise by the contractor to complete the work by December, the stadium's renovation is still ongoing.

Arati expressed his disappointment in the delay but remained optimistic about the project's completion.

"He promised that the work would be done by December, but even now, it's not finished. Despite various problems he's faced, we expect the work to be completed," Arati noted.

He assured that the authorities are taking stringent measures to ensure the quality of the work, stating, "So far, he has replaced the pipes, but we will withhold payment until the job is done correctly and fully."

In addition to the improvements in drainage, the renovation plan includes significant upgrades.

A perimeter fence is being constructed at a cost of Sh20 million, and a backup generator will be installed for Sh10 million.

The playing surface itself is expected to consume up to Sh4 million, with other works proceeding progressively.

Shabana FC, meanwhile, has been compelled to play their home matches at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay County due to the delays.

Tore Bobe which made a dramatic return to the top flight league after winning the National Super League (NSL), has been facing financial struggles since rejoining the FKF Premier League.

The completion of Gusii Stadium is seen as crucial in boosting their revenue, supplementing the support they receive from their betting company sponsor.

The community eagerly anticipates the completion of the stadium, not only for the benefit of Shabana FC but also for the revival of local sports enthusiasm and community engagement.
