Gor Mahia will take on Kenya Police at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday afternoon from 4.00 PM.

Gor Mahia assistant coach Kobi Bismark-Mensah has played down the threat posed by Kenya Police FC ahead of their high-stakes FKF Premier League clash on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium, insisting that K’Ogalo remain the superior side despite recent setbacks.

Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated Silkal Derby, Bismark-Mensah called on his players to respond positively after their 1-1 draw in the previous league match against Ulinzi Stars, stressing that maintaining belief and composure would be key against a Police side eager to make a statement.

“For me, we have done well, especially after a very disappointing first game (against Bidco United),” Bismark-Mensah said.

“We went four straight games winning, and even though we drew our last one, I think we’ve reached a certain bar. We wanted to hit that level again but couldn’t — not because we were bad, but because sometimes the opposition steps up when they face Gor Mahia.”

The Ghanaian tactician, who has been instrumental in steadying Gor’s campaign, noted that their draw was not necessarily a setback but a learning point.

“It happens because teams multiply their preparation when playing Gor Mahia,” he added. “For me, it’s a good sign that we didn’t reach our top level but still didn’t lose. A good team is one that can’t reach its best level yet still find a result.”

Bismark-Mensah emphasized that Sunday’s clash is a must-win for the defending champions, who are looking to maintain their title charge in a season already packed with intense rivalries and shifting momentum.

“We have another chance to respond well after a disappointing 1-1,” he said. “It’s a must-win. I believe we have a very good chance from what I saw in Police. I’m not underrating them — they are a good side — but I don’t think they are better than us. We have quality players who can turn things around.”

The assistant coach praised his squad’s depth and experience, highlighting that Gor Mahia’s seasoned core gives them an edge heading into the derby.

“We have players who are very exposed, and everything is in our favour. We’re playing on a very good field, and I think we stand a chance. It’s possible. Our supporters should come and watch good football. I strongly believe that without any disrespect, we’re going to get a very good result.”

Gor Mahia defender Sylvester Owino echoed his coach’s confidence but acknowledged that Kenya Police will not be easy opponents.

“Truly, they are a tough side,” the Harambee Stars defender said. “But equally, we are prepared enough to make sure that we face them and get maximum points in that match. It’s not going to be easy, so the players really have to be mentally prepared and ready to push to make sure we win.”

The Silkal Derby has become one of the standout fixtures of the FKF Premier League season, with both sides boasting some of the league’s top talent.
