The construction of Talanta Sports City Stadium has received a major boost, positioning Kenya to deliver a world-class venue for AFCON 2027.

The construction of Talanta Sports City Stadium in Nairobi has received a critical financial boost, cementing Kenya’s readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Through a bold infrastructure financing plan, the government has raised Sh44.79 billion via a bond issue that is set to significantly accelerate the stadium’s completion.

According to Business Daily, the government, through Linzi FinCo, floated a Sh44.79 billion infrastructure bond to raise funds for the Talanta Sports City project.

The bond was met with overwhelming interest, with applications surpassing the target and reaching Sh44.875 billion.

This oversubscription reflects strong investor confidence in the project and in the broader goal of positioning Kenya as a premier sporting destination on the continent.

What made the bond particularly attractive to investors was the annual yield of 15.04% over a 15-year period, higher than the average return on similar infrastructure bonds.

Additionally, all interest earned is tax-free, further boosting investor appeal.

To ensure investor confidence, the bond is backed by a standby letter of credit from Kenya Commercial Bank, and the government has committed to covering payment obligations even if the financing model is restructured in the future.

This influx of capital is a timely lifeline for the project, which had been progressing under tight financial constraints.

As of April 2025, the stadium was 37% complete, yet only 5% of the payment to contractors had been released.

With the funds now secured, payments to contractors will resume without delay, allowing the project to gain momentum and stay on schedule.

Located at Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road, Talanta Sports City is set to be a 60,000-seater state-of-the-art stadium, designed to meet FIFA and CAF standards.

The facility will host football and rugby matches, with separate infrastructure for athletics being constructed adjacent to the main arena.

Construction officially began on March 1, 2024, and the projected completion date is December 2025.

The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is undertaking the construction under a public-private partnership arrangement, with oversight provided by the Kenya Defence Forces Engineering Department.

President William Ruto’s personal inspection of the site earlier this year further emphasized the national significance of the project and his administration's commitment to delivering the stadium in time for the continental showpiece.

The stadium will be complimented by Kasarani and Nyayo which have both undergone renovations for the co-hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championships with Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in August.
