SuperSport United may be sold to a consortium aiming to revive Bloemfontein Celtic, potentially relocating and rebranding the club.
SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has once again had to address mounting speculation around the potential sale of the Tshwane-based club, as reports intensify linking the club to a consortium aiming to revive the iconic Bloemfontein Celtic.
This follows recent claims by a foreign coach, who was reportedly in informal talks with SuperSport over the vacant head coach position, that he was told the club “may not be in existence next season” due to looming ownership changes.
“This kind of speculation is not where any of our thoughts are occupied right now,” Matthews told FARPost in response to the claims.
“The issue of SuperSport being sold had been coming up since 2019 without any substance to date.”

Harambee Stars Coach Benni McCarthy Snubs Bafana Bafana As He Declares Allegiance
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has declared his allegiance if Kenya and his beloved South Africa's Bafana Bafana encounter each other.
The comments come after a whirlwind few weeks for the club, which sacked head coach Gavin Hunt in March following a dismal run of form that saw the team win just five of their first 21 league matches this season.
Currently sitting 13th in the DStv Premiership with 26 points from 24 matches, the club faces one of its most difficult seasons in recent memory.
Revival of Celtic on the Cards?
According to multiple sources, a well-resourced consortium is in advanced talks to purchase SuperSport United’s top-flight status with the intention of relocating the team to Bloemfontein and reviving the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic.
One insider told FARPost: “The idea is to buy the club and rename it Bloemfontein Celtic.”
If the deal is completed, it would mark a dramatic shift in South African football, effectively bringing an end to the SuperSport United era in Tshwane. Celtic, affectionately known as Siwelele, enjoyed massive support across the Free State before the club’s PSL status was sold to Royal AM in 2021 — a move that left fans heartbroken.

Sources close to the negotiations indicate that the proposed purchase includes relocating the team back to Bloemfontein and rebranding under the Celtic banner.
This would, however, require formal approval from the Premier Soccer League (PSL), which governs club status transfers.
Coaching Search Clouds Club Vision
Despite interest from several coaches keen on the SuperSport head coach job, the club’s uncertainty has cast a shadow over recruitment efforts. The same foreign coach who spoke to FARPost shared that during his discussions with SuperSport, he was informed the club might soon be sold.
This revelation adds weight to concerns that the ongoing instability may impact preparations for next season.
With only a handful of matches left in the current campaign, the technical and executive leadership of the club appear to be balancing their on-field challenges with behind-the-scenes developments that could reshape their future.
