South Africa and Leeds United legend Lucas Radebe has sharply disagreed with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos over his continued omission of an in-form forward.

South Africa football legend Lucas Radebe has weighed in on the ongoing debate over the exclusion of forward Thembinkosi Lorch from the national team.

Lorch has been in great form for Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, with five goals and three assists in nine matches this season, but has been snubbed by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

That has seen the veteran Belgian tactician come under pressure over his continued omission of the 32-year-old from the national team but the coach has been categorial that he has no place for Lorch as he finds him ‘old’ and does not represent the future.

What Did Hugo Broos Say About Lorch?

“You have to make choices. Lorch was once with us, I think two years ago when we played in Morocco and he was playing very good at Pirates at that moment,” Broos said of Lorch last Thursday.

“His performance was not good. Then I followed him, he played, then he didn’t play. At Pirates he dropped out of the team and then he went to Sundowns because Rulani [Mokoena] wanted him.

“But after a few months he didn’t play anymore. Ok, now he’s playing good in Morocco, but you also have to look at his age. This is not the future, I’m very sorry, this is not the future.”

Radebe Wants Wydad Star in Bafana Squad

However, Lorch has continued doing his talking on the pitch and scored another goal for Wydad on Sunday, reigniting the debate, and former South Africa captain Radebe is among those who feel the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates forward has to be in the national team.

“As a player, you want to be at the best level you can be,” Radebe said in Johannesburg on Monday. “You want to represent your country in the highest level but it is not up to you.”

“It is up to you to keep yourself fit and keep yourself in that level where you know that there is that possibility [to earn a call-up] but football for the fact that his name is mentioned…He is one of our greats and I would like to see the best representation of Bafana Bafana,” the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner further said.

With Broos not leaving until after the 2026 World Cup, it seems Lorch will have to wait until the 73-year-old departs before he earns a recall to the national team, if he maintains this form.
