The Gabon striker died on the spot after falling from the 11th floor of his apartment in China where he has been playing.

Gabon striker Aaron Boupendza has passed away in some unclear circumstances following an unfortunate fall.

Boupendza is reported to have fallen from the 11th floor of his apartment in China, where he had been playing for Chinese Super League club Zhejiang FC, and died on the spot.

Chinese authorities have started investigations into the footballer’s death with suspicions of an accident, homicide or suicide.

Boupendza is said to have been in the house with his brother when an argument ensued and it is still not known if the altercation led to the footballer’s death.

His brother is expected to be quizzed over the death following some unconfirmed reports that the player may have been pushed.

Zhejiang FC learned of their striker’s death after he missed a training session without explanation and sought to find out his whereabouts.

The 28-year-old was a well-travelled striker, who had played in France, Italy, Qatar and the United States, before moving to China.

Boupendza is fondly remembered for his stint in Turkey where he enjoyed a fine 2020-21 season at Hatayspor, scoring 22 goals in 36 matches, to win the Golden Boot award.

He had played 35 times for Gabon, scoring eight goals, but was not part of the Panthers team that beat Harambee Stars 2-1 during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Nairobi in March, when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored both goals.
