Peter Ongechi scored a brace as Shabana FC returned to the summit of the National Super League table courtesy of a 3-0 win over Darajani Gogo at a packed Police Sacco Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The striker made all the difference as he curled in a brilliant freekick on the stroke of halftime to send fans into delirium for Shabana’s opening goal.

The Glamour Boys had come close to breaking the deadlock twice with Ongechi and Justine Omwando missing from close range before the goal.

Shabana then won a freekick on the edge of the box and Maestro, as he is popularly known, stepped up to curl it home and leave the Darajani Gogo goalkeeper with no chance.

After the break, Darajai Gogo came close to equalising when Ronald Okelo received a good ball in the box but he fired inches wide before Asena Khubeib drew a good save from the Shabana goalkeeper with a rasping shot.

However, Ongechi showed why he is the division’s highest scorer when he sealed his brace and Shabana’s second 20 minutes from time, scoring via a brilliant header.

Nehemiah Onchiri put the result beyond doubt when he headed in Shabana’s third goal six minutes from time after a neat exchange of passes in the box.

Victory leaves Shabana top of table with 67 points, three ahead of second placed and already promoted Murang’a Seal with three matches remaining.

Elsewhere, Mara Sugar failed to move far away from Migori Youth as they could only draw 0-0 away to Mombasa Elite.

Mara went into the match tied on 53 points with Migori and needed a win to open up a three-point lead over their rivals for the promotion slot but missed chance, handing them an opportunity to move to third if they secure a win against Gusii on Saturday.

In Friday’s other matches, MCF recorded a 4-1 win over Kibera Black Stars to move to ninth on the table.
