Mamelodi Sundowns legend Manqoba ‘Shakes’ Ngwenya feels claims of tactical leaks to Rulani Mokwena are not true and it could just be mind games ahead of Saturday’s clash.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Manqoba ‘Shakes’ Ngwenya has weighed into the ongoing investigation into claims that the club’s suspended analyst had been leaking information.

Sundowns suspended analyst Mario Masha on Monday following claims the he was leaking tactical information to former coach Rulani Mokwena, whose side MC Alger face the Brazilians on Saturday.

The South African champions are under pressure heading into Saturday’s CAF Champions League game as they must win to make it to the quarter-final while a draw or defeat would send Mokwena’s side into the last eight.

However, pre-match talk has been dominated by Masha’s suspension with club spokesman Tiyani Mabunda saying an internal investigation is ongoing to ascertain whether the suspended technical official had been providing inside information to the opponent.

It was a surprise given Mokwena is a former Sundowns coach, who left the club in July 2024, after four years as head coach, and knows most of the players. Ngwenya feels the 39-year-old tactician would not go to such lengths given his understanding of the squad.

Sundowns Legend Pours Cold Water on Leak Claims

“Things have not been going well at Sundowns recently so when stories like these come out, you can tell that there is a lot of pressure on the team,” Ngwenya said on SoccerBeat.

“Coming to this game in the Champions League, it is a tough one and it is against Rulani. For me, what is it that Rulani doesn’t know about Sundowns?” he posed. “I think he knows so much about Sundowns. Rulani knows Sundowns so well I don’t think he would need much intel.”

Mokwena’s side arrived in South Africa on Wednesday ahead of the high stakes match that could see Sundowns dumped out of the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2018.

Heading into the final group stage fixture, Al Hilal lead Group C with eight points, one better than Mokwena’s MC Alger, while Sundowns have six and five for Congolese side St Eloi Lupopo.

Sundowns must therefore win to seal a place in the quarter-final, adding an extra layer of pressure on coach Miguel Cardoso and his players.
