REPORT: Barcelona face lengthy Champions League ban for financial irregularities amidst European Super League support

Barcelona's financial troubles and their involvement in the European Super League debacle has reportedly landed them in hot water with UEFA

Spanish giants Barcelona are on the brink of a major crisis as reports emerge of a possible exclusion from the UEFA Champions League starting from the 2024/2025 season.

Barcelona facing potential financial violations

The looming ban is attributed to alleged serious violations of financial regulations set by the European football association UEFA, with insiders decrying the state of the Blaugrana’s latest financial statements.

The heart of the matter lies in Barcelona's alleged breaches of UEFA's financial regulations, which mandate clubs to balance incurred expenses with corresponding revenues. UEFA evaluates these financial aspects based on the latest three-year cycle and the severity of the issue suggests that Barcelona could face exclusion from the prestigious UEFA Champions League, starting from the 2024/2025 season.

Contradictory Financial Reports:

In September, Barcelona declared a net profit of 304 million euros, seemingly deflecting potential penalties. However, it appears that these figures might not present an accurate picture.

UEFA's financial regulations specifically focus on revenues directly linked to the football business, excluding revenues from various sources such as the sale of future TV and marketing rights, as well as other sports.

Since the major contribution to Barcelona’s declared profit is the financial windfall gained from the sale of assets and future TV rights in the summer of 2022, the money gained from the Blaugrana’s famous levers may not be considered by UEFA as profit for the club.

Barcelona failing to satisfy UEFA’s FFP laws

Insiders have revealed to German newspaper WELT AM SONNTAG that behind the scenes of the association, Barcelona's financial statements are considered "a mess."

This internal turmoil raises the spectre of a Champions League ban lasting "for two to three years." The severity of the penalty could be proportional to the financial loss incurred, creating a precarious situation for the Spanish club.

Previous UEFA Fine:

This isn't the first time Barcelona has faced UEFA sanctions. In the summer, the club was fined 500,000 euros by UEFA's financial control chamber.

The fine was imposed after Barcelona was found to have incorrectly reported profits from the sale of intangible assets that did not represent relevant income.

Barcelona suffering for European Super League connection?

Barcelona's support for the European Super League (ESL) has added complexity to the situation. The club's public statement declared support for the ESL, encouraging constructive debate among football bodies. As one of the leading founders of the ESL, Barcelona's position could influence UEFA's rulings, further complicating the club's standing.

As Barcelona navigates this financial storm, the possibility of a Champions League ban looms large. The club's intricate financial situation, coupled with its involvement in the ESL controversy, raises questions about its future in top-tier European competitions. The next moves by UEFA and Barcelona will undoubtedly shape the fate of this football giant in the coming seasons.
