Kassim Junior's coached side have moved to fourth place on the National Super League standings

Gusii FC strengthened their chase for top-flight football with a deserved 2-1 victory over Mwatate United in Thursday's only National Super League (NSL) fixture at Simeon Nyachae Stadium in Kisii.

The Kisii-county-based side went into the encounter eight points behind second-placed Murang'a Seal and were itching to bounce back after a 1-0 loss to Mara Sugar.

Cyrus Oucho, who came back from an injury lay-off, could have marked his return with a goal in the tenth minute after being released by Hamisi Hadi, but his shot met an alert Peter Madala, who pulled off a terrific save.

The experienced custodian was called upon again shortly, denying  Kevin Elegwa, who started up front alongside Edwin Ouko.

A breakthrough for  Gusii  would come four minutes to the break courtesy of a low strike from Dennis Toeri after a through ball from Hamisi.

The hosts took the one-goal advantage to halftime, but Mwatate United would soon draw level after the break when Alvin Ngotho struck at the hour mark.

Gusii doubled their lead eight minutes before the match courtesy of Bravo Otieno's neat finish into the top of the corner to make it 2-1.

Despite conceding twice, Madala continued to have an excellent game – blocking Oucho's attempt at a second goal from point-blank range to keep Gusii in the hunt.

The dying minutes were more about controlling the game for Guisii, who hung on for a hard-fought victory, which saw them move to fourth place on the table with 41 points while Mwatate dropped to 13th position on the standings.
