Pitso Mosimane Reveals Why Locally-Based South Africa Qualified for World Cup Ahead of Star-Studded Nigeria

Veteran South African coach Pitso Mosimane has given reasons why Bafana Bafana qualified for the World Cup with a squad full of local-based players unlike other countries.

South Africa are still celebrating their qualification to the 2026 World Cup after sealing their ticket on the final day of qualifiers while Nigeria are left banking on tough playoff matches.

Bafana Bafana secured their World Cup slot after beating Rwanda 3-0, with the help of Nigeria, who thrashed Benin 4-0 on Tuesday, to make it to the playoffs.

Both teams headed into the final match with a chance of a direct ticket but needed favours from elsewhere and it is South Africa who had luck smiling their way as the Super Eagles helped their course.

However, looking at the entire qualification journey, South Africa fully deserved their place as they won six matches, drew three and lost one as opposed to Nigeria, who had four wins and five draws, although Bafana Bafana would lose three points when they were docked by FIFA for fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho.

South Africa Relying on Sundowns and Pirates Stars

What makes South Africa’s run even more impressive is that their squad is largely made up of local-based players as opposed to Nigeria, where nearly everyone plays in Europe.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates players form the bulk of the South Africa squad, with five from the two sides in the starting lineup against Rwanda on Tuesday.

However, they still proved good value for their money as they secured a return to the World Cup, a tournament they last played in 2010 as hosts, but last qualified for in 2002.

Veteran South African coach Pitso Mosimane says it is not just the impressive work of veteran Belgian tactician Hugo Broos but also South African clubs’ good run in continental competitions.

Mosimane Explains Why Bafana Are Shining

“Thank you, coach Hugo, Helman [Mkhalele], Technical Team and our players who really gave a gallant fight throughout the qualifiers. Participation of our local teams in the semifinals of CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup has added value to our national teams,” Mosimane posted on X.

Sundowns have been a mainstay in the Champions League, making it to the quarter-final or better in the last seven years, including the final last season, while Pirates reached the semi-final of the same competition in 2024-25.

Broos has built a solid core of players, both young and experienced, who compete favourably with the rest in Africa and this was also witnessed at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, when they finished third.
