The Harambee Stars captain was recognised for his outstanding contribution to Japanese football during his time with Kashiwa Reysol.

Harambee Stars captain Michel Olunga has expressed his delight at being included in the top three greatest moments of Japan’s J-League in the last 30 years.

As the J-League celebrated the great milestone on Tuesday, it listed Olunga alongside Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta and Kaoru Mitoma, who is currently lighting up the Premier League with Brighton and Hove Albion, as the players whose contributions were greater than all the others in the last three decades.

Olunga was recognised for his incredible eight-goal haul for Kashiwa Reysol in a 13-1 victory over Kyoto Sanga on November 24, 2019.

The 29-year-old finished the season with 27 league goals as Kashiwa completed the J2 campaign as champions and won promotion to the first division.

“Happy to be selected among the top three greatest moments in the history of J-League. Can you guess which moment it was?,” Olunga teased fans online.

Mitoma’s amazing run to set up a goal for Kawasaki Frontale was voted the greatest ever moment, the winger going on to help the club to a league and Emperor’s Cup double, while Iniesta’s first goal for Vissel Kobe was second.

The touch, turn and finish by the nine-time La Liga winner was a work of art as he made a statement upon arriving in the J-League that he still had all the magic in Kobe.

Olunga, meanwhile, enjoyed a great season in the top flight after helping Kashiwa to promotion as he scored 28 goals to win J1 Top Scorer and MVP awards, establishing himself firmly as one of the J-League’s best-ever players.

He would move to Al-Duhail in Qatar in January 2021, hitting the ground running by scoring 20 goals in 22 games and followed it up with back-to-back Golden Boot Awards after notching 24 and 22 in the league in the last two seasons and won his maiden league title with the club last month.
