AFL, which was known as the Africa Super League, was created to showcase the best of African club football and provide football fans in Africa the opportunity to see and enjoy the beautiful game.

The competition was also put together as a means to inject more money into football development for clubs in Africa and the promotion of African football.

It is an annual competition that was announced by FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, with an initial plan to see 24 elite teams from across the continent compete at the highest level.

However, CAF and FIFA decided to kick off the maiden edition of the knockout tournament with just eight teams before returning to the initial plan for the 2024/2035 season.
