Olympic champion Noah Lyles isn’t one to take criticism lying down.

The double world champion is as fast with clapbacks as he is on the track.

Lyles was quick-witted in his response to Kerley, noting that he has now become the benchmark for elite sprinters.

"It's very interesting to watch how people move now, because before 2023, most conversations were like, 'I want to be the best, I want to be the best.' Now every conversation is, 'Yeah, I'm better than Noah. Yeah, I could beat Noah. Noah, Noah, Noah.' Like, I'm not even in the room and yet I'm living rent-free in people's minds, I haven't paid rent in years," stated Lyles, hinting that Kerley is 'obsessed' with mentioning him.

"And again, it's interesting to watch, because now I've become the quota. I've become the benchmark. Like, if you don't beat Noah, did you beat anybody?" he added.

Lyles went on to dismiss Kerley's claim that he lacked the mental toughness to compete against the Olympic bronze medalist.

"Then I’m listening to him talk like, 'You don't have the mental thing,' and I'm just sitting there like, I don't even need to say anything. Because I already know people are going to go online, look it up, and go back to 2023, and they'll see he didn't make the semi-finals. Then they’ll go back to the Olympics and say, 'Oh, you did better, you got third, but you didn’t win,'" stated Lyles.

The double world champion, however, proceeded to give Kerley his flowers, citing his 2022 World Championships triumph and his 9.76 personal best in the 100m as achievements that stand tall.

"And he's going to hold on to his world championship from 2022 and his PR—and those are very impressive things. You know, I have a world championship in the 100. Not easy to get. Running 9.76? Not easy to do. Trust me, I’m still trying to hit that myself. Those aren't easy things," he said.

"But to say that I’m not good—well, he didn’t exactly say I’m not good. He just believes he’s better. And honestly, that’s good for him. If he didn’t believe that, he’d be pretty boring to compete against," he noted.

The American sprinters have shared the stage on multiple occasions, either as teammates for the USA or lining up against each other.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Lyles went on to claim the double in both the 100m and 200m, while Kerley missed out on the finals.

Fast forward to the 2024 Paris Olympics, and they lined up against each other again, with Lyles claiming gold and Kerley settling for bronze, as Jamaica's Kishane Thompson claimed silver.

This campaign, they are yet to face off against each other, having had contrasting starts to their seasons.

Lyles opened his season at the New Balance Grand Prix with a 60m dash win in February, while Kerley's recent season opener at the Jamaican leg of the Grand Slam Track ended in defeat to fellow American sprinter Kenny Bednarek.

The feuding rivals are, however, expected to line up against each other at the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships in September.
