Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has raised eyebrows by including Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes in his top five Premier League players of the season, despite the club's underwhelming campaign.

Manchester United currently languish in 14th place in the Premier League table, their poor form continuing with a recent 1-0 defeat to Wolves.

However, Fernandes has been a relative bright spot for the team, contributing eight goals and nine assists in his 32 league appearances, often appearing to carry the side.

What Rooney said

The Premier League legend selected Fernandes in his top five despite Man Utd's struggles.

“Obviously Man United haven’t had a great season but he’s been the one consistent player who keeps producing so I’ll go with Bruno for number five," he told Amazon Prime.

He continued, “In fourth place, I’d probably go with Morgan Gibbs-White. I think he’s had a fantastic season for Nottingham Forest, creating and scoring goals and being the main player there in my opinion.

“In third place, I’d go with Cole Palmer. I know of late he hasn’t scored the goals he did at the start of the season, but I still think he’s been really influential for Chelsea this season.

“In second place, I’d go with Isak from Newcastle. I think his all-round play, his goals, obviously scoring the goal in the final as well. Isak would be my number two pick and my number one pick would be Mo Salah.

“I think over the last few years his performances has been excellent and this season again it looks like he’s going to spearhead Liverpool to the title.”

Rooney's full top five included Mohamed Salah (1st), Alexander Isak (2nd), Cole Palmer (3rd), and Morgan Gibbs-White (4th), placing Fernandes ahead of players from teams enjoying more successful seasons.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles duo Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina have enjoyed a noteworthy season where they showcased their qualities in the English Premier League for Fulham and Nottingham Forest, respectively.
