Mathare United have appointed Leonard Odipo as their new coach, replacing Collins ‘Korea’ Omondi who failed to save the team from relegation.

Mathare saw their 25-year stay in the top flight come to an end in the 2022-23 season after finishing second from bottom in the 18-team Football Kenya Federation Premier League and will now have to contend with a spell in the second-tier National Super League.

The slum boys are looking for an immediate return to the Premier League and have gone for an experienced hand, giving former Nairobi Stima, Sony Sugar and Tusker Youth coach Odipo the job.

“After the conclusion of the 2022-23 Kenyan Premier League season, the club immediately embarked on a strategy to have the team return back to the top flight as soon as possible,” Mathare said via a statement.

“The first part of this plan was to bring in a new technical unit that was familiar with the club both in and out. And after a rigorous process, we can reveal that Mathare United has reached an agreement with the following individuals;

“Head coach: Leonard Odipo, first assistant coach: Geoffrey Maina, second assistant coach: Julius Mativo, youth team coach: James Otieno, goalkeeper trainer: Elias Otieno, team physio: Rodrick Embukane, team kit manager: James Ndung’u.”

Odipo, who joined Mathare in 2021 as an assistant coach, is the club’s third coach this year after Omondi took over from Samuel Koko at the start of May.

The new technical bench will now be tasked with building a squad capable of challenging and securing promotion from the grueling Super League at the first time of asking.

Mathare CEO Jecton Obure last weekend blamed their relegation on match fixing and he will be hoping that such incidents do not creep in next season if the club have to achieve their objectives.

Mathare will begin their recruit phase on Monday ahead of the new campaign.
