The England forward limped off late in the second half for what could be a groin injury.

Manchester United recorded a 2-0 Premier League win over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday but were hit by a Marcus Rashford injury scare.

Scott McTominay and second-half substitute Anthony Martial were United’s scorers as they extended their unbeaten home record to 24 games.

Meanwhile, Jordan Pickford pulled off a good save in the eighth minute when he denied Rashford and Bruno Fernandes. In the first instance, the Three Lions goalkeeper stopped Rashford’s right-footed shot before he quickly reacted to keep Fernandes’ effort at bay.

With the first clear chances of the game, United failed to grab the lead.

Another chance for the home team to take the lead came in the 12th minute. Fernandes delivered a superb corner and found Antony, the Brazilian bent a left-footed effort towards the goal, and although he beat Pickford, the ball came off the post. Aaron Wan Bissaka reacted quickly to gather the loose ball but his first-time shot went wide.

After struggling to contain the Red Devils for the opening 15 minutes, Everton created their most open chance in the 19th minute. The Toffees worked well down the right, and Seamus Coleman found Ellis Simms inside United’s area.

Although he had time to slot home, Simms dragged his shot wide as Everton’s clear chances were wasted.

Breakthrough

United scored the opening goal in the 36th minute after initially finding it hard to find a way past Pickford.

Rashford did well at the edge of the box to find Jadon Sancho, who waited for a moment before laying the ball in the path of McTominay. The Scotland international, from a tight angle, fired past the Everton goalkeeper with a powerful low shot for the breakthrough.

As Everton remained quite solid in the early minutes of the second half, United kept attacking, but Pickford saved the visitors with remarkable interventions.

Three minutes after the hour mark, Fernandes attempted to square the ball to Rashford on the left, but Pickford left his line quickly to collect the ball before the United forward.

The England goalkeeper was called to action again in the 67th minute when Marcel Sabitzer picked out Fernandes, but the Portuguese midfielder directed a rather weak header at Pickford.

Martial on target

The Red Devils doubled their lead in the 71st minute when Martial finally beat Pickford. United took advantage of a mistake committed by Coleman, and Rashford picked up the ball and drove forward from his flank before he fed Martial, who slotted home.

Rashford limps off

Rashford had to come off in the 80th minute and was replaced by Wout Weghorst. The in-form forward signaled to the bench, indicating he wanted to come out as he looked to have picked up an injury.

As he made his way up the tunnel, he was applauded by the fans. As Rashford’s injury scare shook United, Christian Eriksen made a return to action when he came on for Sancho in the 76th minute.

The three points from the win are crucial in United’s pursuit of finishing in the top four.
