A statement from Liverpool confirmed the shirt number will be retired across all levels of the club, including the women’s team and academy.
“The move is recognition of not only the immeasurable contribution our lad from Portugal made to the Reds’ on-pitch successes over the last five years, but also the profound personal impact he had on his team-mates, colleagues and supporters and the everlasting connections he built with them,” the statement read.
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recent triumphs. He lifted the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022, added another League Cup in 2024, and capped his time at Anfield by helping secure the club’s 20th top-flight title last season.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain, shocking the football world and prompting widespread tributes.
Jota and his brother lost their lives when their Lamborghini left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle at about 00:30 local time on 3 July. He had been returning to Liverpool for pre-season by car and ferry, as doctors had advised against flying following minor surgery.
Anfield Mourns as Family and Teammates Gather
The funeral for the brothers was held last Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, where a large Liverpool delegation paid their respects.
On Friday, Rute Cardoso, their three young children, and Liverpool’s entire squad visited Anfield together to honour Jota’s memory.
Cardoso, who had married Jota only 11 days before the accident, was seen carrying flowers among the sea of tributes left by supporters outside the stadium.
Liverpool will play their first match since Jota’s passing on Sunday against Preston North End in a pre-season friendly.
A minute’s silence will be held and several commemorations are planned to celebrate the life and legacy of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
