GENERAL Kenyan Olympic committee reveals talks to ensure football qualification in 2028 edition

NOC-K has revealed plans in collaboration with both FKF and the Sports Ministry to get Harambee Stars to qualify for the 2028 Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles, USA.

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) secretary general Francis Mutuku has revealed that they have held talks with both the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Sports Ministry on how to get Harambee Stars to qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Kenya’s football team has never qualified for the Olympic Games before and is yet to establish consistency in terms of AFCON qualification, but hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside neighbours Uganda and Tanzania is seen as a game changer that could transform Kenyan football for the better.

All three nations have already qualified for the AFCON in 2027 by being hosts, and under the current Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, there has been more emphasis on developing grassroots and youth football thanks to publicising school games and the Talanta Hela initiative.

Now, NOC-K secretary general Mutuku has revealed that they want to work together to ensure that Kenya’s U23 side will qualify for the Olympics in 2028

"We've asked FKF and the Ministry of Sports to consider making hosting AFCON 2027 a stepping stone for Kenya's football qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics," Mutuku said during the Paris 2024 media seminar that took place in Sagana.

Since the CAF U23 tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the Olympics was created in 2011, Kenya have never qualified for the tournament.

Kenya did not participate in the qualifiers for the tournament in the last edition since the country was undergoing a year-long suspension from football.
