Kenya's Rising Stars will be hoping to get their U20 AFCON campaign off to a flying start against Morocco in their tough group B opener.

Kenya’s Rising Stars will be hoping for the ideal start when they face Morocco at the ongoing U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) taking place in Egypt on Thursday night.

Rising Stars have never played at the tournament before, and are less fancied by alot of fans and pundits in the quest to secure one of the four slots for the World Cup set to take place in Chile this October.

They will also face Nigeria and  former champions Tunisia in the same group B. The Rising Stars will have tough encounters across all their group stages and will need to dig deep against their more fancied opponents.

Captain Amos Wanjala however, remains upbeat heading into the tournament.

“We are ready to face any team in the tournament. So far, so good. Whoever we meet, we will handle them accordingly. We came here to win, not as losers,” Wanjala said.

“Kenyans should trust us. We are ready to represent them, and we will not disappoint. We have had excellent preparation and will deliver results they can be proud of. We know we are regarded underdogs but we will use it to motivate us.”

Assistant coach Anthony Akhulia has declared that the Rising Stars are not in the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON U-20) just to "fill up the numbers".

“With that squad of 25, we will manage. We cannot say we will sit back because that is not an attitude we can condone. We will manage just fine.”

Kenya secured their spot at the finals by finishing as runners-up in the CECAFA U-20 Qualifiers.

Their road to the finals saw them dominate the competition with a series of excellent performances, including a commanding 4-0 victory over Burundi in the semi-finals.

The Rising Stars went unbeaten throughout the tournament, with four wins and one draw, scoring 14 goals and conceding just one. Despite falling short in the final to Tanzania, their overall display showed the world that Kenya’s youth football is on the rise.

Live coverage of the clash can be found on the CAF YouTube channel with Kenyans eager to watch their girls complete a turnaround and qualify for yet another World Cup.

Women’s football is growing rapidly in Kenya, and this match is another opportunity to showcase the country's young talents on a broader platform.

Given the intense nature of their training sessions and their 2-2 draw with Ghana, some players ended up picking up knocks during the clash.

“Without mentioning names, at least three players will be unavailable but from the squad of 25 players we will still have a good team to deliver on our plan," said Akhulia in a pre-match press briefing.

However, Pulse Sports understands only Ulinzi Stars defender Telena Ochieng might miss the clash due to injury, with his situation being assessed before the game tonight.

Key Players

Amos Wanjala-  The team captain, Wanjala is a leader both on and off the pitch. His organisational skills and ball-playing  ability will be crucial in dictating the tempo of Kenya’s play.

Predicted Rising Stars Line Up

With Ibrahim Wanzala surprisingly not called up for the championships, Bidco United shot-stopper Wycliford Oduor is expected to start between the sticks.

At the back, vice captain Baron Ochieng will start at right back, with his ambidextrous nature as well as willingness to influence the game in the final third a thing of value. Captain Amos Wanjala will be expected to marshal the defence alongside KCB’s Manzur Suleiman Okwaro, with Collins Ochieng starting at left back.

In midfield, Kevin Wangaya and Andres Odhiambo will take turns trying to dictate the tempo of the game as a double pivot, with Aldrine Kibet expected to start infront of both in the number 10 role. On the flanks, Hassan Beja’s direct running will be needed on the left, with William Gitama Mwangi playing on the other flank. MOFA’s Lawrence Okoth will be expected to start upfront.
