Kenya Police's CAF Champions League Group Stage Hopes Dealt Massive Blow As Al Hilal Claim First Leg Advantage

Kenya Police have been dealt a massive blow in their quest to qualify for the group stages of the 2025/2026 CAF Champions League after being humbled by Al Hilal at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Kenya Police’s hopes of reaching the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time in their history suffered a major setback after a narrow 0-1 home defeat to Sudanese heavyweights Al Hilal Omdurman in the first leg of the 2025/26 second preliminary round.

The match, played behind closed doors at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Friday afternoon, was initially scheduled for the Nyayo National Stadium but had to be relocated due to the memorial service for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

After a cagey opening 20 minutes, the visitors found the breakthrough in the 19th minute through Adama Coulibaly, who punished a defensive error to give the Sudanese side a vital away lead.

The goal came from a misplaced back-pass by Charles Ouma, which allowed Al Hilal to press high. Ouma’s attempted recovery clearance ricocheted off Abdel Rouf, falling kindly to Coulibaly on the right flank. The forward then showed composure and pace, breezing past Brian Okoth before firing a powerful left-footed strike past goalkeeper Job Ochieng.

The goal stunned the hosts, who had started brightly, dictating possession but failing to turn their dominance into clear chances. Despite a few promising forays from Samuel Ayanride and Eric Zakayo, the Law Enforcers lacked the final pass to trouble Al Hilal’s experienced backline.

After the break, head coach Etienne Ndayiragije responded with a tactical reshuffle, bringing on Edward Omondi and David Okoth in the 50th minute for Zakayo and Exaule Misuri, aiming to inject fresh attacking impetus. Later substitutions — Albert Otieno and Geoffrey Onyango — sought to maintain intensity as the team chased an equalizer.

However, despite dominating territory and possession, Kenya Police were unable to breach Al Hilal’s disciplined defensive structure. The visitors managed the tempo efficiently, frustrating their opponents and preserving their slender advantage to take back to Omdurman for the second leg.

With the return leg set to be played in Libya  next week,  Ndayiragije’s men face a daunting task. They must overturn the deficit against one of the most experienced sides in African club football if they are to keep their dream of reaching the group stage alive.
