Kenya is awaiting CAF’s verdict following a key inspection of its stadiums for the 2024 CHAN tournament

Kenya is entering a decisive phase in its preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) as the country awaits the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) verdict following a high-level stadium inspection.

The tournament, scheduled for August, will be hosted under a joint effort between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

CAF’s third vice president, Pierre Alain Mounguengui, led the inspection delegation, arriving in Nairobi on Thursday after completing similar assessments in Kampala.

The inspection in Kenya concluded on Saturday with visits to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Kirigiti Stadium, two of the venues earmarked for the continental showpiece.

During a high-level engagement with the CAF team, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, emphasized the government’s unwavering dedication to meeting CAF’s standards.

The CS assured the delegation that Kenya is well-prepared and aligned with all recommendations necessary to host a successful tournament.

“We welcome the support that CAF has accorded Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania during this critical preparation period,” said CS Mvurya as quoted by Citizen Digital.

“I want to assure CAF that Kenya is ready, and we have aligned our systems to fully support CAF in delivering a stellar event.”

He also noted progress on regional coordination, saying, “The countries have progressed well in mobility discussions aimed at removing logistical bottlenecks. We will be updating CAF soon with feedback on the decisions reached by our respective governments.”

In addition to the primary venues, Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium, CAF is also assessing the readiness of supporting facilities, including Ulinzi Sports Complex, Police Sacco Stadium and Kirigiti Stadium.

These venues are expected to provide training grounds and backup infrastructure necessary for a tournament of CHAN’s scale.

Kenya’s ability to meet CAF’s requirements will be pivotal not only for the success of CHAN 2024 but also for the country's broader ambitions to become a regional hub for international sporting events.
