Kariobangi Sharks coach William Muluya has backed striker Eric Mmata to blossom despite his lack of goals on his return to the club

Kariobangi Sharks head coach William Muluya has jumped to the defence of Eric Mmata after he failed to find the back of the net against Gor Mahia on his return to the club from Tusker.

Sharks lost the game 1-0 thanks to an absolute belter of a goal from Chris Ochieng, who unleashed an unstoppable left-footed strike from outside the box into the back of the net to keep them at the top of the table on 40 points and with no defeat.

Sharks now find themselves in 14th place after 18 games, just one point above the drop zone.

Mmata did find himself in some good positions to score, but did not find the back of the net, although he did not get alot of service coming his way.

Muluya has jumped to the defence of Mmata and his fellow attackers.

“Sometimes, we should not look at it from a point of view that he failed to find the back of the net, but the work that he does enables the team to get into the game,” Muluya said.

“We are still there but if I look at it closer, I think the aim is to try and get these players to start pushing on and not losing their focus over a 90-minute spell.

“We will work with these very players over the second leg, so Mmata coming back will help the team play better.”

While at Kariobangi Sharks in the 2020/21 season, the forward, who previously turned out for Mathare United, was directly involved in 21 goals, scoring 11 and assisting 10.

He failed to get going at Tusker, having to deal with injuries and irregular game time, but will be hoping to find his spark again back at Sharks.
