Messi is among the favourites to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or title as the best player in Europe after a stellar World Cup campaign that saw Argentina lift the title for the first time since 1986.

The former Barcelona star has already won the Ballon d’Or award seven times, the most in the accolade’s history but believes that each accolade won across his career, not just the Ballon d’Or, have been special.

Speaking about how special the yearly award is, Messi said, "[The Ballon d'Or] is a beautiful honour, but I was lucky to win everything: the Champions League, league titles, Copa America, World Cup. These are the important awards."

Messi is up against the likes of Manchester City’s trio of treble winners Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, and Rodri for the award and is believed to be the favourite for the award despite the Cityzens’ achievements in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Messi’s edge is due to his performance in the 2022 FIFA World, where he was named MVP of the tournament after leading Argentina to victory with seven goals and three assists.
