Former AFC Leopards secretary general Mzee Steve Ogalle has urged the club to make changes to its governance structure so as to benefit from its big support base.

Former AFC Leopards secretary general Mzee Steve Ogalle, has shared his insights on how the club can reclaim its former glory, emphasising the need for a shift in perspective regarding its support base and governance structure.

Ogalle urged club officials to dispel the notion that AFC Leopards primarily belongs to Nairobi, emphasising that the club draws the majority of its supporters from Western Kenya. He called for a reorientation towards recognising and leveraging the strong community support base in the region.

"The officials must change the thinking that the club belongs to Nairobi. The community that supports AFC Leopards is Western Kenya-based. The club may be based in Nairobi but it draws most of its supporters from Western Kenya," stated Ogalle, highlighting the importance of acknowledging the club's regional roots.

To propel Leopards forward and strengthen its foundation, Ogalle proposed constitutional reforms that would align with the devolved system of governance. He suggested rotating governors from Western Kenya as patrons, fostering closer ties between the club and the local leadership.

"If we are going to move forward and strengthen the club, the constitution must change to join the devolved system where we have governors who can go on rotation as patrons," Ogalle emphasised, outlining a structural change aimed at enhancing the club's regional connections.

Reflecting on the club's past successes, Ogalle underscored the importance of grassroots support and community engagement. He reminisced about the network of branches established during his tenure, highlighting key figures from Western Kenya who played pivotal roles in mobilizing support.

“During our time, we had branches. In Trans Nzoia, we had Pius Gumo and Masinde Muliro, in Bungoma we had Burudi Nabwera and Nathan Munoko, in Kakamega we had Ibrahim Ambwere, in Vihiga there was Moses Mudavadi, in Butere Martin Shikuku and Busia James Osogo,” Ogalle remarked, advocating for collaboration among regional leaders.

“Now, we have a lot of leaders from Western Kenya who are in government and capable of elevating the club to the highest level. All they need is to work together for the benefit of the club. Right now, we should not be begging, we should be among the richest clubs in Africa.”

Ogalle served as Leopards secretary general between 1970 and 1975 when Ingwe won two league titles.
