Harambee Stars defender Michael Kibwage has explained how Kenya can survive a tough CHAN 2024 group of death.

Harambee Stars defender Michael Kibwage has outlined the approach the national team will use to survive a tough Group A in the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya will co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

Kibwage, who returned to the national team fold for the first time since 2020, is competing for a starting berth at center-back alongside Gor Mahia duo Sylvester Owino and Alphonce Omija, as well as Bandari’s Swaleh Pamba.

“We Must Be Disciplined” – Kibwage Sets the Tone

Speaking exclusively to Pulse Sports, Kibwage—who features for Tusker FC—expressed his delight at being part of the squad as Kenya prepares to make history.

“The mood is fantastic and everyone is excited for the task ahead,” Kibwage said.

He acknowledged the pressure that comes with representing the nation but emphasized it is a challenge he is embracing.

“We know it will not be an easy job, but I am ready. I am representing 50 million Kenyans, so I have to use this opportunity well.

"I am ready to fight, and in camp, the spirits are similar. We are working hard to make the people of Kenya proud.”

Kenya were set to take part in the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Arusha—alongside Tanzania, Uganda, and Senegal—but withdrew on Monday morning, citing “unfavorable conditions.” The decision shocked many, but Kibwage insists there is no reason to panic.

“Training has been fantastic. I have learned a lot, and by the time the tournament starts, we will be good to go.”

Game Management Will Be Key in Tough Group

Harambee Stars are in full gear for CHAN 2024.

Kenya have been drawn in Group A, regarded by many as the "Group of Death," alongside DR Congo, Angola, Zambia, and Morocco. While not many expect the Harambee Stars to progress, Kibwage believes that tactical discipline and a strong defensive foundation could tilt the odds in their favour.

“In games like these, you have to consolidate your defence because it gives you more confidence.

"The more the game remains at 0-0, the higher your chances of winning.”

Okumu Confident Ahead of Debut Tournament

Meanwhile, his teammate, KCB right back Kevin Okumu, also shared his thoughts as he prepares to make his tournament debut.

“The national team is different from club football because you get to represent many people as a country,” Okumu said.

“It is a challenge on its own.”

Despite the high-stakes nature of the tournament, Okumu remains optimistic and is urging fans to get behind the team.

“My fans should expect us to win. I am confident of a good showing at the upcoming CHAN.”

The 2024 edition will be Kenya's first participation in CHAN since 2009, and with players like Kibwage and Okumu ready to rise to the challenge, there’s renewed hope that the Harambee Stars can defy expectations and advance out of the group.
