Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has opened up on why he enjoys a special relationship with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy may now be working thousands of miles away from Old Trafford but he has fond memories of his time at Manchester United.

McCarthy worked as attacking coach at United for two years from 2022 to 2024 under former manager Erik ten Hag and during his time there, he forged strong relationships that still exist to date.

One of those was built with United captain Bruno Fernandes who became so close to him thanks to his spell in Portugal where he played for FC Porto from 2003 to 2006.

McCarthy says he grew fond of Fernandes because the midfielder comes from a family of Porto supporters and lived near the club’s Estadio do Dragao Stadium.

“Bruno grew up from Porto not far from the Dragao Stadium so his family is all Portistas [FC Porto fans]. He grew up in Porto, Bruno and Diogo (Dalot). Diogo was still playing in the U12 when I was at Porto so he was there when I was also there,” McCarthy told SuperSport TV.

“Bruno’s family when they all come [to the Old Trafford stadium], he is this amazing and when he comes Man United fans are like: ‘Bruno, Bruno, Bruno.’ But his family is like: ‘Benni, Benni, Benni [while taking photos]’

“Because they saw me, they came to Porto to watch when I was there.”

McCarthy revealed that his successful spell at Porto, which saw him score 58 goals in 124 games and win two league titles as well as the UEFA Champions League, helped him work easily with Fernandes as he could not only speak Portuguese with him but the playmaker also wanted to learn some of the things he saw him do as a player.

“So, me and Bruno just have a different [relationship]. He would always remind me; ‘Hey, remember you used to take freekicks like that, can we work on it’,” he added.

“Bruno would ask me. He was the player that asked me the most to work on things because obviously he watched me play and he idolised Cristiano Ronaldo but he [also] idolised that generation of Portugal football.”

McCarthy is now focused on his job in Kenya where he hopes the experience picked while working with world class players like Fernandes can help steer Harambee Stars to success after years of struggle.
